Emphatic Preston put 5 past relegation threatened Bristol City
Tuesday 4th April 2017 – 7.45pm kick off – Deepdale – Sky Bet Championship
Bristol City were visitors Preston know all to well about, having come up from League One together in 2015. With Bailey Wright’s departure in January, this fixture was another Preston fans looked out for.
The first half was a fairly even contest, with Tom Barkhuizen’s 6th goal in as many games the only difference. McGeady with his 9th assist of the season setting up Barkhuizen. Going in to half time 1-0, both teams would have been okay with. However, two minutes into the second half was to see the floodgates start to open. Robinson was brought down by Flint in the penalty area, to see North End awarded only their 3rd penalty of the season. McGeady took the responsibility of the penalty on his 31st birthday and successfully slotted home.
Paul Gallagher’s delightful cross from the right, straight onto Clarke’s head who punished Bristol City, by powering the ball into the right hand corner. A fantastic ball from Gallagher was played down the right hand side to Barkhuizen who selfishly helped make it four, who squared a pass across the box into the path of former City man, Callum Robinson slid in from close range.
Robinson followed up with his second of the night, from yet another Aiden McGeady
assist which succeeded a Paul Gallagher corner. The three being Preston’s stand out players, despite a fantastic performance from every single player.
McGeady nearly made it five, when he had his powerful shot saved by City ‘keeper Fielding, who made the save of the season to deny McGeady. A truly magical shot and subsequent save anyone would be proud of.
The 10,224 fans within Deepdale were certainly treated to a spectacular show. Bristol City manager Lee Johnson insisting the 312 travelling fans got a full refund for the ticket out of the players wages.
