Preston North End February 2017 round up

11 points from a possible 15 concludes a positive month for PNE who look to push onto the play offs

Preston again started the month on the road, this time a trip across the Pennines to Barnsley. Barnsley were two places ahead of Preston and three points ahead going into the game so anything other than a loss was a positive for North End, so a clean sheet and a point meant the 0-0 result was positive.

Preston v QPR

Brentford visited Deepdale 7 days later, a fixture that many flinched at after the 5-0 thrashing of Preston in the reverse game. However, Preston looked to get revenge and casually put 4 past Brentford which could have easily been more had it not been for the visiting goalkeeper, to keep the game ending 4-2.

Valentines day saw the arrival of Birmingham City, a game where Preston comfortably came out the better off, with all 3 points. Honestly, Preston could have and should have had a lot more goals after frequently testing the visiting ‘keeper, but ultimately it wasn’t to matter as Preston won 2-1.

Wigan v PNE

To mark the fourth anniversary of Simon Grayson’s appointment as Preston manager was the trip to Wigan Athletic where an uneventful game, bar Hugill’s penalty miss was a good point away from home against a team who really dug in. A 0-0 result one that the 4,765 travelling fans will forget quite quickly.

Last up in February was the visit of Queens Park Rangers whom Preston beat in the reverse fixture back in August. Another good home performance meant that Preston recorded three successive home wins, and came from behind to win twice this month. The first league double this season was concluded with a 2-1 victory.

An impressive month, with only 4 goals conceded and 8 goals scored saw Preston climb to 9th in the table, 6 points behind 6th placed Sheffield Wednesday. Next up for Preston is a trip to the capital on Saturday 4th March to play 7th placed Fulham at Craven Cottage who are only 1 point ahead.
