Preston North End v Birmingham City

PNE’s Valentine’s date ended with 3 points

Tuesday 14th February 2017 – 7.45PM kick off – Deepdale – Sky Bet Championship

9,619 Preston fans chose to spend the most romantic of the year with the boys in white, 2 goals, and 3 points were the present they received.

Players at the full time whistle

Preston started the night as they meant to go on, carrying the tempo from Saturday’s fantastic win against Brentford. Callum Robinson opened the scoring early on from yet another super Aiden McGeady cross. Robinson heading home whilst the Preston fans were applauding the life of Sir Tom Finney on the 3rd anniversary of his death, a fitting tribute.

Preston couldn’t seem to find the second and unfortunate to not go into the break with a bigger lead, the former Manchester United ‘keeper Tomasz Kuszczak keeping Birmingham in the game making some fine saves from Cunningham, McGeady, Hugill and Horgan.

Valentines day under the lights

Che Adams equalised for Birmingham just after the break, with a fine volley to beat Maxwell into the bottom corner. Preston fans looked to rue missed chances in the first half as the home side had to soak up a lot of pressure from the visitors.

However, Hugill was on hand to score the winner for Preston, with a lovely assist from Irishman Horgan, who drove the ball into the box to cut it across to Hugill who poked it home.

Birmingham skipper Craig Gardner was sent off shortly after the goal, for a second bookable offence and all Preston had to do was hold on to the one goal lead and seal the victory.
